Yes, they can. Winckelmans 20x20 tiles are frost-resistant thanks to their extremely low water absorption of less than 0.5%. They are suitable for terraces, verandas, and outdoor pathways. Be sure to use frost-resistant tile adhesive and grout, and ensure proper drainage.
What is the difference between Winckelmans 20x20 tiles and standard ceramic tiles?
Winckelmans 20x20 tiles are made from full-body unglazed porcelain stoneware. The color runs through the entire thickness of the tile, making them much harder, fully frost-resistant, and giving them an authentic matte appearance. They are slightly more expensive than standard ceramic tiles, but with proper care they can last a lifetime.
How many Winckelmans 20x20 tiles do I need per m²?
For the 20x20 format you need approximately 10.4 sheets per m². Always allow for cutting waste and breakage: at least 10% extra for straight patterns, at least 15% for diagonal layouts or complex rooms, and 15 to 20% extra for small spaces such as bathrooms or hallways. Keep leftover tiles after installation for future repairs.
What is the delivery time for Winckelmans 20x20 tiles?

Are Winckelmans 20x20 tiles suitable for use in a shower?
Yes. Winckelmans 20x20 tiles are fully vitrified and have a water absorption rate of less than 0.5%, making them nearly impermeable to moisture. For shower floors, mosaic formats such as 20x20 mm or 50x50 mm also offer excellent slip resistance due to the many grout joints providing extra grip.
Do Winckelmans 20x20 tiles need to be treated in a shower?
Yes, this is strongly recommended. Treat the tiles with an impregnating agent such as Fila MP90. While the tile itself does not absorb water, the matte surface texture can retain soap residue and limescale. Impregnation makes the surface hydrophobic, preventing dirt from penetrating the micropores and making cleaning much easier.
How often should the Fila MP90 impregnation be renewed?
For optimal protection in a shower environment, we recommend renewing the impregnation approximately every 5 years. With heavy use, it may be necessary every 1 to 2 years. A simple test: sprinkle a few drops of water on the tile. If the droplets bead up, the protection is still effective. If they soak in, it is time for a new treatment.
Are Winckelmans 20x20 tiles frost-resistant for outdoor use?
Yes, completely. Winckelmans 20x20 tiles are frost-resistant and can safely be used on terraces or outdoor paths. Due to their extremely low porosity, water cannot penetrate the tile and freeze inside it.
What adhesive should I use for Winckelmans 20x20 tiles?
Use a high-quality cement-based powder adhesive classified as C2 and suitable for porcelain stoneware. Because the tile absorbs almost no water, an adhesive with strong bonding power and some flexibility is essential for a durable installation. Ready-mixed paste adhesives are not recommended for floors.
How do I remove the cement haze after installation?
Remove cement haze about 48 hours after grouting using an acidic cleaner such as Fila Deterdek. First wet the grout joints thoroughly with water so the acid does not damage them. After cleaning, rinse the surface well to neutralize any remaining acid.
Can I clean Winckelmans 20x20 tiles with black soap or linseed oil?
No, this is strongly discouraged. Fatty soaps leave a residue on the matte tile surface that traps dirt and dust. Over time, the floor may become dull and sticky. Always use a neutral cleaner without greasy components.

Winckelmans 20x20 tiles are very strong. Their flexural strength ranges from 380 to 450 kgf/cm², while the standard requirement is around 250 kgf/cm². This makes them suitable for heavy commercial traffic as well as residential use.
Do Winckelmans 20x20 tiles fade in sunlight?
No. The tiles are completely UV-resistant and will not fade or discolor when exposed to sunlight. This makes them ideal for conservatories, covered terraces, and bright interior spaces.
How can I tell if the cement haze has been properly removed?
Once dry, the floor should not show any whitish film and should not feel dull or sticky. A properly cleaned floor reveals the clear, deep color of the tiles. If a white haze is still visible, a second treatment with an acidic cleaner may be required.
